Mexico Fans Gather Outside Ecuador's Hotel to Disrupt Sleep Before World Cup Match

Fans call it payback for the 2024 Copa América, and there may be real science behind the sleep sabotage.

Mexico Fans Camp Outside Ecuador's Hotel to Ruin Their Sleep Before the World Cup Clash

Home field advantage is taking on a whole new meaning in Mexico City. Ahead of their Round of 32 World Cup showdown, Mexico fans gathered outside the hotel where Ecuador's national team is staying, making as much noise as possible in an effort to keep the players from getting a good night's sleep. The scenes outside the Westin, where the squad is reportedly lodged, were loud, rowdy, and unmistakably strategic. For better or worse, El Tri's supporters are clearly leaving nothing to chance the night before kickoff.

What Fans Are Doing

The plan is about as straightforward as it gets. Rather than save all their energy for the stadium, fans decided to bring the party to Ecuador's doorstep the night before the match, banging, chanting, and generally making sure sleep was off the menu. It is gamesmanship in its purest, rowdiest form, the sort of thing that turns a hotel block into an open air pep rally. Whether it crosses a line or simply counts as fair play is exactly the debate lighting up the comments.

Payback From the 2024 Copa América

Before anyone calls it dirty, fans were quick to provide context. Many pointed out that during the 2024 Copa América, Ecuador supporters reportedly did the very same thing to Mexico's team outside their hotel. From that angle, this is not bullying so much as Mexico simply returning the favor. Soccer has a long memory, and few rivalries keep receipts quite like this one. As the saying goes, what goes around tends to come back around, ideally with a megaphone.

Does It Actually Work

Here is the part that matters once the whistle blows. The science suggests sleep really does move the needle. A Stanford study published in the journal Sleep found that basketball players who extended their rest improved their shooting accuracy by roughly 9 percent, along with faster sprint and reaction times. Flip that around, and a night of interrupted sleep could dull the very edges an elite athlete depends on. So while the tactic looks like pure chaos, there may be a sliver of real method behind the madness.

A Risky Game of Gamesmanship

Of course, there is no guarantee any of this rattles a team of professionals who travel and sleep in noisy environments for a living. Ecuador could just as easily channel the disrespect into motivation and come out swinging. That is the gamble with a stunt like this, it either tilts the night your way or hands your opponent extra fuel. Either way, the Mexico City crowd has made its presence felt before a single ball is kicked, and El Tri fans will happily take the credit if the plan pays off.
